About Us

We are a small design focused practice of architects and interior designers offering a fully integrated design and project management service specialising in residential and smaller scale commercial projects.

We enjoy projects specifically when we are working directly with our clients in collaboration. Together, we work towards finding innovative, elegant and sustainable design solutions, often to specific and unique requirements, which inherently respond to place and environment.

Floate architecture was established in 2000 to focus on the design and delivery of smaller scale projects. Through the scale and nature of projects undertaken, we continually seek to develop an interactive process between architect and client, promoting high caliber design content and a refined methodology geared towards elegant problem solving.

Established by Mark Floate, the practice continues nearly 30 years of architectural experience in a broad range of projects in Edinburgh, London, Sydney, Brisbane and now based in Lismore, in the northern Rivers of New South Wales.

Born in 1963, Mark studied in both Edinburgh and London, graduating in 1987 with distinction. He commenced his professional career in London in the office of Evans and Shalev Architects known for their innovative approach to public and civic buildings. In 1992 Mark moved back to Edinburgh to work with Richard Murphy Architects on a range of intricate projects. Here, Mark developed his interest in smaller projects demanding a high level of client interface, and all round ability in architectural process and an emphasis on finely crafted design within tight time frames and cost constraints.

In 1994, Mark moved with his family to Australia, joining Bligh Voller Nield, firstly in Sydney and later in Brisbane. Mark became a Practice Director of the firm in 1997 and joint office manager of the Sydney office in 1998. The office grew from 4 to 100 people, with a series of award winning buildings and completed projects. Mark later established a dedicated project team within the office clearly focused on particular project types, generally smaller in scale and often with unique or special requirements.
